Marie antoinette book antonia fraser7/5/2023 Vivid writer with a flair for fascinating detail, Versailles comes alive.” - Washington Post Book World Of numerous earlier biographers.” - New York Times Book Review That said, for anyone truly interested in her life leading up to her royal marriage and beyond, this is the book." At times it reminded me of a textbook in a graduate course. It was not light summer reading, however. It presented Marie Antoinette's story vividly and objectively. Antonia Fraser’s lavish and engaging portrait of Marie Antoinette, one of the most recognizable women in European history, excites compassion and regard for all aspects of her subject, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, buaimedt also in the unraveling of an era. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted, privileged, but otherwise unremarkable child was thrust into an unparalleled time and place, and was commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in history. France’s beleaguered queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous “Let them eat cake,” was the subject of ridicule and curiosity even before her death she has since been the object of debate and speculation and the fascination so often accorded tragic figures in history. The national bestseller from the acclaimed author of The Wives of Henry VIII.

Church and religion expert Diana Butler Bass wondered if this was true, and this book is the result of her extensive, three-year study of centrist and progressive churches across the country. For decades the accepted wisdom has been that America's mainline Protestant churches are in decline, eclipsed by evangelical mega-churches.

Stone soup mcgovern7/4/2023 So, this clever little guy tricks the old later and convinces that he can make the most amazing soup out of a stone which would be 'fit for the king.' He insists she puts in more ingredients to add to the flavour of the soup. What it is about: It is about this poor man, who sees a house and asks for food, the lady doesn't listen to him and tells him there's no food at home. The day I read it to her for the first time, she demanded a stone soup. She on the other hand found the book to be hilarious. I thought she will take some time to understand. The Toddler's take: I really have to stop under-estimating Z. When I did pick it up I was smiling, partly because it is a very funny story and partly because it did take me back to childhood. Why I picked it and what was my Reaction: Well, when the team was doing it's research on May Tale in a Mail based on the theme of food, this book was recommended by a couple of moms, it also received amazing reviews, I had to pick it up and check it.

Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri7/4/2023 She allows them to grow as if unguided, as if she were accompanying them rather than training them through the espalier of her narration. Lahiri handles her characters without leaving any fingerprints. The generational conflicts Lahiri depicts cut across national lines the waves of admiration, competition and criticism that flow between their two families could occur between Smiths and Taylors in any suburban town and the fight for connection and control between Hema and Kaushikas children and as adultsreplays the tussle that has gone on ever since men and women lived in caves. Except for their names, 'Hema and Kaushik' could evoke any American's '70s childhood, any American's bittersweet acceptance of the compromises of adulthood. from 'The Custom-House,' by Nathaniel Hawthorne, an apt, rich metaphor for the transformations Lahiri oversees in these pages, in which two generations of Bengali immigrants to Americathe newcomers and their hyphenated childrenstruggle to build normal, secure lives. The fact that America is still a place where the rest of the world comes to reinvent itselfaccepting with excitement and anxiety the necessity of leaving behind the constrictions and comforts of distant customsis the underlying theme of Jhumpa Lahiri's sensitive new collection of stories, Unaccustomed Earth.

Extras uglies7/4/2023 It sat unmoving in the corner of her vision: 451,396. It was probably crowded by now, packed enough with surge-monkeys and manga-heads that nobody would notice one ugly extra snooping around.īesides, Aya Fuse was an expert at being invisible. She didn't remember dozing off, but the tech-head bash must have already started. She flexed her finger and the city interface flickered to life, layering across her vision. When she'd moved out of her home and into a dorm, her parents had given her permission to get an eyescreen and skintenna, but that was only so they could ping whenever they wanted. So Aya was stuck with her big nose - definitely ugly - and her normal vision. They liked to pretend the world was still stuck in the Prettytime, when everyone had to wait until they turned sixteen to change themselves. Lots of people her age had infrared vision, but Aya's parents had this thing about surge. The hovercam nuzzled against her shoulder apologetically. She lay in bed another moment, waiting for the spots to fade. In answer, Moggle flashed its night-lights. Tiny lenses gazed at her face, curious and alert, reflecting starlight from the open window. It rose into the air and floated toward Aya's bed. Then a shape slipped from among the folds of spider silk and cotton. A pile of dorm uniforms rustled, as if a small animal stirred underneath.

After both of her parents died, an aunt and uncle adopted her. The effect of being an orphan is another potent thread. Elise must ultimately decide what she values in her close relationships and whether a boy can be her best friend. It took only one to ruin my life.” ()Īs children mature, their friendships ebb and flow. However, many readers would agree with Elise when she stated, “it didn’t matter how many new kids there were at school.
