Grace and Eliza meet as new recruits to the newly formed Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, where each hopes to alter her destiny. Eliza Jones is warring with her employer and father, the editor and publisher of a prominent Black newspaper, because he’s relegated her to covering the society beat. As the United States heads into World War II, two Black women in Harlem are dissatisfied with their career prospects.Īlthough she’s a brilliant pianist, Grace Steele freezes at her Juilliard audition and fears to confess her failure to her mother, who’s already distraught about son Tony’s disappearance in the Philippines.

‘I forget who it was that recommended men for their soul’s good to do each day two things they disliked: it was a wise man, and it is a precept that I have followed scrupulously for every day I have got up and I have gone to bed. But I’m glad I persevered because by the time I got to the second chapter I had got into the rhythm of Maugham’s style – long and sometimes convoluted sentences in long paragraphs – and found he had a sense of humour. I nearly abandoned it to look for something else to read. The first chapter introduces the main character, Charles Strickland, an artist, giving details of other articles and biographies that had been written about him, philosophising on the nature of art criticism. I don’t think it has a good beginning at first it didn’t grab my interest and make me want to read on. Somerset Maugham before, which I had enjoyed, but I knew very little about him or his work and when I started to read The Moon and Sixpence I thought I could understand why Maugham is considered an ‘outmoded’ author.

Behind her eyes author6/30/2023 Since then, A Study in Scarlet has been published in many editions both in English and in translation, and allusions to the novel have frequently appeared in the works of other authors. The novel was first published as a book the following year, but it was not until Doyle’s publication of the Sherlock Holmes short story “A Scandal in Bohemia” in The Strand Magazine in 1891 that the character of Sherlock Holmes received widespread acclaim. Originally called A Tangled Skein, the novel was rejected by several publishers before it was accepted for publication as A Study in Scarlet in the November 1887 issue of Beeton’s Christmas Annual, an obscure British magazine remembered for little other than its inauguration of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle wrote this novel in less than three weeks when he was 27 years old.
